Elodie M. Shipley (1960 – 2021)

Known to many as Squirrel or Mama Squirrel, Elodie M. Shipley, 60, died in the early hours of Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021.

Born Feb. 9, 1960, in Pomona, California, Elodie grew up in Southwest Louisiana where she attended ICCS and Barbe High School.

She was the quintessential Jack of all trades: She could sew, crochet, paint, draw and garden, she could pave a road in any season and parallel park a loaded 5-ton dump truck. She once made the best potato lasagna anyone had ever had but she didn’t write down the recipe so she could never duplicate it.

She had exquisite handwriting and a funny story for every occasion. She never met a stranger because she treated everyone she met like they were old friends. She gave great compliments.

Elodie is survived by her two children, Blaine Bourk, of Sulphur, and Marguerite Shipley, of Lafayette; her younger brother, Richard Bourk, of Houston, TX; foster daughter, Michelle Cormier, of Lake Charles; niece Christa Bourk Knox; and generations of “adopted kids” she loved along the way.

Elodie was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Shipley, her parents and her older brother, Vincent Bourk.

She was dearly loved and she is deeply missed.

Memorial arrangements, to be held in the Lake Charles area, are still in the works at this time. Check back with her children for updates.
